  • Overview

    This position performs inspections for quality of work and materials used in a variety of public works infrastructure projects including construction, repair, maintenance or alteration. Monitors conformance with city standards, specifications and safety standards.


    • Inspects work quality and materials used in a variety of public works projects during various stages of construction and remodeling in accordance with building and construction standards and codes, ordinances and regulations
    • Previews plans and specifications for assigned project prior to inspection
    • Prepares detailed data of construction progress and inspection
    • Prepares various reports on daily operations and activities
    • Takes samples of materials for examination or analysis by laboratories. Performs routine materials and density field tests; coordinates results of tests and verifies approval of structure
    • Observes work during progress and upon completion. Coordinates change orders and advise contractors of changes in plans and specifications
    • Coordinates construction inspection activities with other city departments, including gas, telephone, and electrical utilities, cable TV and related operational areas.
    • Performs preliminary and final inspections and recommends acceptance of developments
    • Meets with contractors to interpret points, plans and specifications. Provides technical guidance for compliance with city standards, procedures and regulations.


    • At least 5 years of construction inspection experience involving the construction and maintenance of public works, systems and structures
    • Working knowledge of principles, practices, methods and techniques of conducting public works project inspection work
    • Working knowledge of industry standards and specifications for public works construction projects
    • Working knowledge of accepted safety standards and methods of construction activities
    • Working knowledge of basic mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as applied to construction inspection work
    • Previous experience in methods and techniques of collecting and testing construction materials
    • Previous experience in materials and equipment used in public works construction projects. Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations
    • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
    • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs. on a consistent basis- daily task includes carrying various types of equipment such as ladders, and other construction equipment; hand and power tools; and large buckets
    • Must be able to work from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with overtime as needed to meet project deadlines
    • HS Diploma/GED
