  • Overview

    The Construction Inspector is responsible for the oversight of construction methods and processes on transportation engineering projects so that work performed is completed in accordance with plans and specifications and Federal/State administrative requirements. 

    Responsibilities

     

    • Assist Project Engineers/Managers in developing scope of work and resources needed for each project
    • Knowledgeable of construction materials, methods and procedures; can properly maintain documentation and perform quantity and engineering computations
    • Familiar with plans and specifications for work and the preparation of documentation to demonstrate work is performed in accordance with TxDOT standards
    • Manage, delegate and audit administrative functions of a project in accordance with TxDOT Construction Contract Administration Manual, to include Submittal and Requests for information
    • Update Project Engineers/Managers and other stakeholders on work in progress, equipment utilization and time/cost estimates as appropriate
    • Make recommendations concerning construction issues
    • Report any issues within area of responsibility on the work with a contractor for compliance with plans and specifications
    • Schedule work assignments 
    • Observe and inspect construction work

    Qualifications

    • 5 years’ experience in construction inspection which includes roadway (earthwork, sub base, concrete and asphalt pavement, drainage, lighting, guardrail and striping for rehabilitation/new) and bridge (drilled shafts, driven piles, reinforcing steel, structural concrete, and bridge decks) elements, traffic control, and environmental controls for transportation projects
    • Knowledgeable of TxDOT construction plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements for public construction projects
    • Knowledgeable of construction materials, methods and procedures
    • Ability to maintain field and office records; perform complex quantity and engineering computations (using algebra, trigonometry and geometry); and read and interpret plans and specifications
    • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills
    • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, for all level of employees in an organization
    • Proven ability to effectively manage time sensitive deadlines with changing priorities
    • Knowledgeable of safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
    • Knowledgeable of construction inspection methods, procedures and techniques
    • Ability to perform duties in non-traditional work hours in remote location and under adverse weather conditions
