Overview

The Facilities Design Leader manages all aspects of the design process, from research, to conceptual and final design, and through construction. This position provides on-the-job training to enhance the core competence of team members. This position leads project teams towards successful adoption of new design ideas and possesses a strong mastery of design fundamentals.  This position is expected to be able to work on multiple projects concurrently and deliver on expectations within tight deadlines. In addition to leading a team of engineers and technical professionals, this position will also be actively involved in professional associations and community organizations as Pape-Dawson continues building partnerships within the community we serve.

Responsibilities

  • Review proposals, budgets, and client agreements.
  • Lead, mentor, and oversee design and technical aspects of the team(s) projects including detailed engineering design and calculations, report writing, permitting (local and state) and presentations to clients, public agencies, and the public.
  • Write responses to client RFQs and Solicitations.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with clients, public agency officials, and community leaders.
  • Coordinate and monitor project tasks, budgets, and schedules.
  • Participate in the development of company design and production standards.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, or computer-generated reports.
  • Inspect project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications and safety or sanitation standards.
  • Develop or test models of alternate designs or processing methods to assess feasibility, sustainability, operating condition effects, potential new applications, or necessity of modification.
  • Recommend the use of utility or energy services.
  • Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design, performance specifications, or environmental regulations.
  • Compute water flow rates, or factors to determine design specifications.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for the construction of facilities, such as water supply systems, surface water treatment facilities, groundwater treatment plants, and well construction oversight.
  • Provide technical direction or supervision to junior engineers, engineering or computer-aided design (CAD) technicians, or other technical personnel.
  • Responsible for the technical and professional development of project team(s).
  • Design pumping systems, pumping stations, and pipelines for the use of raw and potable water.
  • Perform hydrologic, hydraulic, or water quality modeling.
  • Design or select equipment for use in potable water to ensure compliance with government standards.
  • Conduct, or oversee the conduct of, investigations on matters such as water storage, permits, or other compliance and regulatory issues.
  • Identify design alternatives for the development of new water resources.
  • Perform hydraulic analyses of water supply systems or water distribution networks to model flow characteristics, test for pressure losses, or to identify opportunities to mitigate risks and improve operational efficiency.
  • Design water pump stations, including water wells.
  • Gather and analyze water use data to forecast water demand.
  • Actively participate in professional associations and civic organizations within the community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from an ABET accredited college or university
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) designation in the State of Texas
  • 10 years of experience managing substantial water and wastewater projects from conception to completion
  • 15 years of experience in potable water design, including facilities, pumping, treatment and permitting
  • Extensive knowledge of design and construction practices for waterlines, storage tanks, pump stations, and transmission mains
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate, both oral and written skills
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with clients, municipal utility districts, public agency officials and community leaders
  • Proven ability to lead a team of engineers and technical professionals
  • Actively involved in professional associations and civic organizations
